This testimonial comes from Christine, mother of Hannah, then aged 8.
In a nutshell, working on the senses and diet put aside all the misleading behaviours and allowed us to work with the core problem of understanding the outside world.
The sensory issues were, for Hannah, physically debilitating; they held her prisoner from the outside world, as it was such an overload. Irlen lenses, diet and Auditory Integration were particular instant successes.
After only 3 days of Auditory Integration Hannah slept through the night, something that at the time was a miracle in itself. Other obvious changes were an improved clarity of speech, quicker response to processing, greater tolerance of noise and noticing the world around her (an example being that she didn't want to walk and I was insisting that we should - Hannah stepped towards the edge of the pavement, stuck her arm up and hailed a taxi. It was such a revelation that she had absorbed how to hail a taxi and then taken the initiative to do it that I reshaped my perspective of her abilities pronto).
AIT also had some adverse effects, Hannah's behaviour during the treatment period was testy and she was frustrated by not being able to use headphones for three months (as were we: Christmas carols for hours on end, when it's not Christmas? I remember it well). They were small problems compared to the benefits, but it is better to be prepared, as we were when it came to the boosts. AIT has also not been a one-off; the big changes have been constant and we have not seen any regression, but Hannah's tolerance to noise seems to wear off periodically and she has had three boosts over the last ten years. The boosts themselves have all brought greater changes in Hannah, and have all been little miracles. I would be delighted for you to give my email address to prospective clients and if they email me with a contact number I will give them a call.
The professionals’ take on autism is to lump everything in as a whole, that behaviour is 'an autism' or an 'autistic trait'. Well, I can only say that in our personal experience many of the autisms and autistic traits are simply a by-product of sensory problems. Resolve the sensory problems and you won’t cure autism, but you will have a calmer, happier, more able person with ASD.
It is also important to add a testimony to you personally, as I believe without an able, autistic-tuned, autistic-loving, autistic knowledge-fountain like you that it would all have been less successful. AIT brought many changes in Hannah, but you brought many changes in us both.
Good work!
